Kautilya Society for intercultural dialogue - presentation

Kautilya Society is a non-profit organization, based in Varanasi, India, and founded in 1998 by professionals working in the fields of philosophy, anthropology, development economics, religious sciences, education, and communications. The Kautilya Society is an association of persons who share the common objective of promoting inter-cultural exchange. It has also developed a support base for research and study in Varanasi since members felt that most people coming to India to deepen their knowledge of Indian studies spend a lot of their time overcoming many difficulties even before beginning their research, studies or other interests.

The Society promotes cultural exchange by creating moments of contact between peoples and by coordinating projects of social and cultural relevance in fields such as protection of cultural heritage, sustainable development, communications (including audio-visuals and multimedia), tourism, etc. Since the promotion of a culture is incomplete without the protection of the varied expressions of that culture, the organization is actively involved in protection and monitoring of the cultural heritage of India in the sacred city of Varanasi.

The headquarters of the Kautilya Society is Ram Bhavan, a house architected in a traditional style and situated in the ancient heart of Banaras along the banks of the river Ganga. Here, the members have tried to create an environment conducive to research and dialogue among members and guests, be they Indian or western, scholars, artists, professionals or humble seekers, to others with similar interests. This traditional, family-style palace hosts twelve bedrooms for guests, a house kitchen, a terrace with a view of the river Ganga and a library with computer and Internet.
By Indian law it is necessary for all residing guests to become members of the Society; annual membership is 6 Euros; life membership is 20 Euros.
