Maieutics: the specific method of education

Once we approach a project , we must be clear if the focus is to make the person more free or to make him obey. But even if you want the person to obey, you must know that a person always wants to be more free deeply inside. He will receive the message only if he is sure that the message makes him freer. We receive what makes us more free. We can bow ourselves to what makes us subordinate, but we can’t receive the message in our souls. In as much as we want the persons to really receive our message, we must be able to clarify that we are saying something that gives new perspectives and new meaning to their lives.

That’s the other approach. And this is the classical Italian approach to pedagogy. The very word "education" comes from the Latin "educere" which means "leading out". So it means to let the personality of a person come out. Socrates uses the term "maieutics" for defining the method of education. "Maieutics" is the practice of obstetrics; and teaching is helping to deliver. The teacher leads the student to bring out of himself his personality.
