Some organizationally sponsored social events are just opportunities for employees to get together and relax, or celebrate. Such events can also be used to make important announcements, or to introduce new programs and goals, products, employees, or managers. Regardless of their purpose, the way they are run and the way the people attending them behave are all part of the organizational culture.

Most people want to feel a sense of belonging where they work—whether they are aware of it or not. For all of us, then, work helps fulfill a variety of needs; accomplishment, security, ego fulfillment, and social needs. That is why organization parties and other social events can produce cohesion and a sense of team spirit. They are opportunities to better get to know the people you work with, and for, on a daily basis.

As with school, where social events can range from formal proms and dinner dances to post-final-exam beer-and-pizza parties, there are many different types of social organizational events. Some are just opportunities for employees to get together and relax, or celebrate. In some cases, spouses, significant others and children are also invited to make them feel a part of the organizational family. Such events can also be used to make important announcements, or to introduce new programs and goals, products, employees, or managers.

This section will look at the events, and at some of the planning, considerations and factors that go into making them successful at two levels:

1.      As a party where people want to have fun and get together with friends.

  1. As a work-related event where project/programme purpose is done, objectives met, or important messages are sent.

Regardless of the stated reason for the event, employees who attend it will want to have fun while they are there. Anyone involved in organizing such a function has to consider that, along with numerous other issues.
